Bummer

Today I was told that I will not have a position at my school next year. I'm being put on a "must-hire" list which means that other schools would have to hire me before they could interview any applicants that aren't already employed by my school system. Still, most schools regard the must-hire list as the crappy teachers that no other school wants, not the awesome ones (with test scores to prove it) who just have low seniority.

I knew this was going to happen since I'm one of the newest teachers at the school, but it still sucks. Maybe the boy will get a new job elsewhere and then I'll just have to worry about finding a job in a whole new school system! One without a stupid union that enables crappy teachers to retain their jobs long after their prime.

  1. As a parent with a child in grade one, I can say that does suck. I would love it if the school system would reward the teachers that really make a difference and that love their jobs....not just show up.

  3. Why don't you buy a certain groovy store, currently for sale, and start a new venture??!!!
I'm sorry that happened - want to go out for a drink sometime soon and we can both vent/share/lean on each other? I never ever see you!

  4. Oh Ali so sorry to read this. Having had a husband who went through redundancy last year I can only but imagine how you are feeling at the moment. And having a little boy in year 1 I appreciate and admire excellent teachers. Hoping good things come your way soon xxx

  6. Ali, I am SO sorry!!! I hope that you find a soft place to land! I am sure with your outgoing streak it won't be long before you find yourself somewhere happier (and further east?) than you are now!

    Keep looking up!!

  8. That is crappy. I have seen that happen here especially in recent years. I got out of teaching in schools and went self employed into related work. Sometimes these harsh pushes can help you find something better, a chance to take a risk and follow a dream.

  10. I feel for you - the teaching market is rough. I wanted to find a job teaching German but they are closing programs all over the nation so I had no chance. Stuck in corporate... blegh. At least you were able to get some experience in... I hope you'll be able to find another position for the fall!

  11. Oh no, I'm so sorry that this has happened. :-( Are unions more hurtful than they are helpful? Sometimes I wonder.
